Identity In Christ

Your Identity In Christ

Who are you?

When asked this question, who are you? Most of us reply with our occupation, or identify with a sport or religion typically.

Mmm, well occupation is something you do. So is a sport identifying as an athlete, and well a religion is something that is man made as opposed to having a relationship with Jesus, so religion is a work that you practice.  You don’t have to agree with me here. Look it up in the bible for yourself.

Today’s Podcast offers an empowering way to find your identity outside of your vocation and relationships.

Tell Story of Little Doll Covered in Oil at Garage Sale (listen to the audio to hear this story)

Romans 8: 15-17 This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!

So in other words, when you accept and acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior.  Of way of explaining what happens to you is this, by the way this is how you learn who you are!

When you are a believer, you are one of Gods Children, you are bought into the family so to speak.

Who are you? You are a mighty child of God!

What Does It Mean To Be A Child Of God?

The important thing to understand is that God loves all of his children equally and unconditionally.  There is nothing more or less you can do to gain or lose more love from him. In fact in Romans 2:11 it says, “For God does not show favoritism.”

This is what Jesus says to us in the Book of John,

John 15:9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

Another must understand is this, He loves you so much so incredibly I personally don’t think we will ever truly grasp the fullness of what that means to us, cause we just aren’t God, we are made in his image. Here is how we get close to understanding what it means to be a beloved child of God (who you are)

10 Examples To Prove He will never Stop Loving you
God loves his kids soo much he says so many times I love you, I will never leave you, or abandon you no matter what you do or how ugly you feel you are or the things in your life are. Or how unworthy, unlovable, broken,  or rejected you might be or feel. That my friends is true love!

1  Deuteronomy 31:6, Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; “He will never leave you nor forsake you.”

2  Deuteronomy 31:8, The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.  “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

3  Joshua 1:5, No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

4  1Kings 8:57, “May the LORD our God be with us as he was with our fathers; may He never leave us nor forsake us.”

5 1 Chronicles 28:20, Then David continued, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the Lord is finished correctly.

6  Psalms 37:28, For the Lord loves justice, and he will never abandon the godly. He will keep them safe forever, but the children of the wicked will die.

7  Psalms 94:14For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.

8  Isaiah 41:17  “The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.”

9  Isaiah 42:16  “I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.”

10  Hebrews 13:5  Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

I like this last verse, relates to 2 weeks ago the call about “The Truth About God and Money.”

There’s way more of this to! But this sampling is just to illustrate a taste of his love and provide evidence that he will never abandon you. Yea it sometimes feel as though he has, you may experience that as a leader and we talked about that in last weeks call about “Overcoming Adversity,” but so many times it says that he will leave you nor forsake you. Just because you can’t see, feel, or hear a person you know at a certain time, doesn’t mean that they don’t love you or have that love for you nor does it mean that you shouldn’t love them back! Right!?

So what does it mean to be a child of God? – 1. That You Are Loved So Much That It May Be Beyond Us Being Able to Fully Grasp and Realize

To Be A Child Of God Means

2. That You Have Access To All of God’s Kingdom! Well what does that mean!?

You are righteous

It means you are made righteous through Christ Jesus. Listen carefully, It says in the bible in, Romans 3:10 “There is no one righteous, not even one;”  also if we jump down a few verses it says in verse 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.” Got it so far?

Now with Christ and through Christ you are righteous, and ill tell you what righteous means in a minute.

A couple more verses down: Romans 3:22 – 24 NIV and NLT
New International Version
This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

New Living Translation
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Websters dictionary defines righteousness as:
1. Acting in accord with divine or moral law :  free from guilt or sin
2. Morally right or justifiable

Righteous means: To Be in good standing with God. When we talk to God and approach him he doesn’t see as a dirty sinners going to hell and fire and brimstone lol, he doesn’t see us as addicts, adulterers, liars, and murders. That’s not your identity those are actions which everyone knows are not great choices.

Because we are made righteous through Christ by how he paid for our sins, our unrighteousness on the cross, our bad thinking, ect ect. God sees us through the lense of his son Jesus.

Because of our relationship with Jesus we are made righteous in the eyes of God as who we are. We are still going to commit sins and mess up all the time but that doesn’t effect our standing with God.

Despite our own crap, he loves us so much and in and through Christ we can pray and come to God boldly in right standing, not because of anything we do but because of what Christ did for us and that’s how the father sees us. So through that lense we are Justified and Righteous in Christ!

So by believing this, which is believing who the Bible clearly says you are, we are transitioning ourselves by faith form having a Sin consciousness and Into a Righteousness consciousness.

  • That means you don’t have to be defeated by guilt – God forgives and gives you a clean slate, he loves ya and understands we all make mistakes, that’s 1 reason why he sent his son Jesus in the first place!
  • You are free from condemnation, don’t carry it anymore.  Jesus says take on his righteousness for his yoke is light and his burden is easy.  Guilt condemnation, sin, bitterness, bad choices, ect all these things weigh you down and stop you from becoming who the bible says you are. Also stops you from recognizing the manifestation of the powerful great human being and spirit you are because of who you belong to and who lives inside of you! ( 1 John 4:4 Little children, you are of God [you belong to Him] and have [already] defeated and overcome them [the agents of the antichrist], because He Who lives in you is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world.)

So because you are the Righteousness of God through Christ Jesus, here are some examples of what that means
So now that we understand what it means to be Righteous with God and not self righteous through our works. Remember right before I shared what righteousness means and is? Well because of that righteous relationship with God the father through Jesus it means!!!

That You Have Access To All of God’s Kingdom!

Well what does that mean!? Lets look at Gods word and His Kingdom

You are new creation, new family member!

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

That means we no longer have to identify as being a victim, a sinner, no good, or anything negative.  When you accept Christ, he says you are a new creation, you are born again, kinda like being adopted into his family.  You must accept that you don’t have to fall back into things you know aren’t good for you, of course the enemy will tempt you, lie to you, and try to keep you defeated! BUT…

The bible says in Romans 8:15 “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”  abba is a term of endearment meaning father, rarely used today.

In John 14: 13-14 from the Message Bible,

“Believe me: I am in my Father and my Father is in me. If you can’t believe that, believe what you see—these works. The person who trusts me will not only do what I’m doing but even greater things, because I, on my way to the Father, am giving you the same work to do that I’ve been doing. You can count on it. From now on, whatever you request along the lines of who I am and what I am doing, I’ll do it. That’s how the Father will be seen for who he is in the Son. I mean it. Whatever you request in this way, I’ll do.

It’s a little easier for me to understand from the New American Standard Bible
13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.”

Here is What You Are Not!!!

  • you are not a victim, you are a victor
  • you are not lazy, you are ambitious and hard working
  • you are not defeated by sickness, disease, emotional/mental health issues. – the word says by his stripes you are healed (Isaiah 53:5) the word says that you have a sound mind!
  • you are not a no good, never amount to anything, loser! – false! “you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you!” (Philipians 4:13)

The Power Of Who You Are
For this section I would confess these, write them down, do whatever you need to do to make these truths real to you so you can accept and believe the powerful, beautiful, and amazing person God has created you to be!

  • You are more than a conqueror! (Romans 8:37)
  • You are a new powerful creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)
  • You are a child of God (John 1:12)
  • You are someone who have the ability to produces wealth (Deut 8:18)
  • You have a powerful sound mind! (2 Timothy 1:17)
  • You have access to a God who meets and exceeds our expectations in abundance (Ephesians 3:20)

Ok guys, I can do go on all day but some of us need to get to work!

You have homework today! Ask God This, “Lord Show Me Who I AM, show me how you love me, allow me to receive, recognize, act on and believe on what your word says about me and what I can do and be, thank you in advance for hearing this prayer and answering it for me, I love you, In Jesus name!”
